Never Judge a Person…

img_1855

She walked into room in a grand gait
And all eyes turned…
Her eyes drew you in like quicksand
Her eyelashes fluttered like fairies’ wings
Her lips glowed hot with crimson
Her skin was smooth like Shea butter
Her hair curled like lazy metal springs
Her slender hands crowned with a well manicured nails
Her figure beautifully shaped like the goddess of beauty
Then she sat down, next to me!
What a ravishing lush view!
I was uneasy with excitement!
I was completely taken in!
I’m not a ladies’ man but,
I am a man who loves style
I thought up a line about the weather
(That one always works with the ladies)
I opened up a converse
I smiled genuinely … or sheepishly?
I introduced myself
Then,
She opened her mouth-
A potpourri of curses and swear words!
She spewed them out without care or restraint!
She had so much going on inside!
And pop! My bubbly bubble popped!
I looked down at her with my self-righteousness
Suddenly, she broke down in tears
My heart melted with pity and compassion…
I learned an important lesson that day-
Never judge a person by the look of their face

Crouched at the altar, tears of profound joy streamed down her cheeks. Surreal emotions coursed through her veins. Folded in her sweaty hands was her little brother’s picture.

He went missing during the war. She never stopped praying. She never stopped believing. She never stopped hoping.

In gratitude she looked up and whispered in a husky tired voice, “Thank You, Father, we have found him, alive.”

…And That’s What We Are Fighting For

“I can’t do this anymore, Sam” Frodo Baggins said, and with a despondent and crestfallen countenance Frodo dropped his sword.
Sam looked at him and gave him an inspirational speech about how good trumps evil. He then finished the speech with the phrase, “That’s what they are holding unto”.
“What are we holding unto Sam?” asked Frodo looking intently at Sam and desperately in need of an encouraging answer.
“There is still some good left in this world, and that’s what we are fighting for“, replied his faithful friend, comrade and companion Samwise. (Scene from Lord Of The Rings: Two Tower)

There’s still some good left in this life
That’s why I keep my hopes alive
There’s still some good left in a man
No matter the extent of evil he may plan
There’s still some good left in any sad event
No matter how dismal things may appear

It’s not over until it’s over so
It’s not over until God says so
That’s the reason Christ saved us
That’s the reason Christ came for us
To show that good always trumps evil
To show that grace always trumps guilt

And that’s what we are fighting for. For if we stop fighting, if we stop believing that God’s Word is ultimate, we are simply handing the victory to the dark side. And I know that will never make things better.

My Name is My Root

Warning: This video contains graphic images which some viewers might find very distressing.

“I’m Kunta Kinte the son of Omorro” replied Kunta Kinte.
THWACK!!! Wallace flogged Kunta with a whip which had piercing iron-hooks at the tip.
“Your name is Toby, now tell me your name!!!” demanded Wallace.
“I’m Kunta Kinte”.
“That’s not your name!!!”
THWACK!!!! Another whipping!
“Toby is your name. Now what is your name?” demanded Wallace
“Kunta Kinte” Kunta replied again in defiance.
THWACK!!!….

Everyone from the plantation gathered around and watched with somber faces. Fiddler whispered to Kunta, eagerly urging him, “Say it boy, just say it, say it…”

“Toby is your name. Now what is your name?” demanded Wallace,
“Kunta Kinte”
THWACK!!!….
Say it!!!!
THWACK!!!!
Say it!!!!
THWACK!!!!!
The floggings, the screamings, the defiance and the demands continued until… the bruised, battered and exhausted Kunta Kinte said, “Toby”.

Fiddler ran to Wallace as he entreated, “He said it, Massa Wallace he said it”.
“Say it again, say it louder!!” demanded Wallace,
“Toby” Kunta Kinte painfully and faintly said.
Then the flogging stopped.

Fiddler untied him and cradled his hurting bruised body as he told him, “It doesn’t matter what massa call you. You keep your true name inside…” (Culled from the series Roots 2017– an epic and award winning movie on slavery).

Why did the young man Kunta Kinte choose to suffer pain and affliction rather than change his name?
Throughout the series, one thing was clear- he tenaciously held on to his name and passed it on to his children.
What’s in a name? What’s in your name? What’s in my name?

My name is my identity.
Your name is who you are.
My name tells a story.
Your name tells me your journey.
My name shows you my family.
Your name shows me your roots.
My name is my root.
Your name is your root.

It doesn’t matter what people call you- dumb, good for nothing, stupid, hopeless, failure, a mistake, etc. You know who you are. A success, an achiever, beautiful, the best there is, a blessing. That’s who you are. Be that person you call yourself and walk in it.

Greener Grasses

It’s Spring and his neighbour just cut her grass. In comparison to his own garden, hers looked a lot greener, fresher and healthier. Instead of comparing the two with a pouted mouth and green monster placard, he decided to find out from her the secret to her gardening.

When the grass is actually greener on the other side, how do we handle it?

Unhealthy comparisons does the heart no good. Sometimes out of spite and jealousy, spiky comments are made.  If we work hard, someday and somehow, we will also achieve what we envied in others.

When we get to that pinnacle of achievement, it’s always great to know we can share our story with others who would then be envying us. Thus, helping them to overcome their envying and most importantly, to pass on the baton to those who also envy them…

A Simple Text…

IMG_2255

She woke up feeling cranky, sulky, tired, and emotionally knackered. A lazy morning, on the bed, she thought about everything that was going wrong, the tad misunderstanding with her daughter the night before…and general nothingness. Then a text came in. It was from her daughter and it read, “You’re the best mum I could ever have. I’m sorry for last night. Happy Easter. Love you xx”.

It was a simple but timely text. It was refreshing and uplifting. She needed to hear something like it. As she stared at the text, a grateful emotion began to spread through her face and into her heart. She opened her mind and embraced it, thus dispelling the dark shadows of gloom that lurked about earlier.

She was truly grateful for daughter and the journeys of life they have experienced together alone. No measure or scale could quantify the extent of love and gratitude that now flowed through her heart.

And with a pleased smile and a renewed strength, she rose up to ride into her day.

It was just a simple text… but it changed her day.

A Dog’s Dream

Listening to the comfortable laps of the waves against the shore, gaping with a dripping tongue as the surfer rode beautifully on the waves like a ballerina dancing daintily to a soft ballad, little people making a fuss about some sand castle while bigger people lay on their bare skins for a tan with cocktails beside them… “Hmm…the pleasures these humans do indulge in” the dog wondered in amazement.
“I wish I could do that”, he sighed with a growl as he lay lazily down on the sun-baked beach sand lapping his margarita.
