In Love With… Words

Looking back, I realise that somehow my preference, natural inclination and love for certain subjects was preparing me towards writing.

In secondary school, I loved English language. I made more effort to pass my English than my mathematics, and somehow I found it easier and more fun. I remember standing in front of my mum’s full size mirror, reading my scribbles or “lecture notes” as I used to call them, pretending to be some dignitary at a very important function, wowing the audience with my exceptional English. 😀😀Even up till now, I still love English language, both spoken and written.
Although English is not my first language, when I hear someone speak a terrible bad English or another making murderous grammatical errors, it drives me insane honestly. I can’t stand bad English. My love for this language is such that either you speak it well or not at all. But then, I’ve relaxed a bit because nobody including me, is perfect, except the Queen perhaps.

Another subject I loved extremely and passionately was literature. Oh, how I loved, memorised, and soliloquised those wonderfully phrased words and sentences especially in poetry and drama. I always gulped them down like a thirsty fish out of water. In school, we read Macbeth, 12th Night, Merchant of Venice, Things Fall Apart, Oliver Twist, Trials of Brother Jero, Great Expectations and a lot more I’ve forgotten. We studied a lot of poems by Christopher Okigbo, Wole Soyinka, and many others. I loved and loved reading many of these poems. In my GCSE I had an A in literature. Literature was like my Walls vanilla ice cream. It never bored me.

Then as a student, during the holidays, I was always indoors, either in our church library or curled up at home reading some novel. I read a lot of James Hardley Chase, Grace Livingston Hills, John Grisham, etc. I read all the readable fiction and Christian novels in our church library then. For some reason, I never read Mills and Boon. I tried it once but didn’t finish it. It was all too girly and very predictable.

On the contrary, I do find mathematics and calculations quite an unwarranted headache. And to think that at some point in my life I wanted to be an accountant… Phew!! What was I thinking?? I’m glad I listened to myself, discovered what I was good at and hence ended up studying law.

Looking back, I’ve come to realise I always preferred words to calculations. It’s no secret, I am in love with words.

Three-Legged Chairs

IMG_2803

Have you ever been betrayed?
Have you ever been left in the lurch?
Neglected, to fend for yourself?…

Abandoned projects
Visions left in the lurch
Blogging websites deserted
Writers gone AWOL
Dreams unfulfilled,
Like an unfinished three-legged chair!
What is going on?

Thinking of Disney’s Toy Story…
If blog sites could talk
What will they say…
If visions had emotions,
How will they feel?

If dreams, aspirations, plans, etc
Could jump out of paper and talk
How will they react?

I think they may say,
“I had so much faith in you,
You betrayed me…
Like an unfinished three-legged chair,
I’m waiting… ad infinitum…

Daily Prompt: Lurch
