Two passengers,

One life,
Two passengers,
The man, the woman,
Many adventures,
Forever together.

Precipitous hills,
Rocky valleys,
Perilous seas,
Peaceful shores,
Pains, joys,
Cries, laughter,
What a journey!

My best friend,
My companion,
United in heart,
United through God,
Marriage truly is
A blessed gift
From God to man

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11)

Tender Drizzles

Soft tender whispers
Your words
They seep into my heart
I listen
Beautiful, delicious
Like the honeycomb
Sets me at ease
A cosy hug, we share
None willing to untangle
Silence
Sweet silence
An eternal cuddle
It seems
Your cheek
Brushes against mine
Caressing faces
Touching noses
Soft strokes
Your hands
Through my hair
A delicate peck
Your lips
On my forehead
I bask in this aura, of love
Feelings, like butterflies
Dancing, fluttering
Inside while we sit
In silence
No words
No actions
Just us and
The ticking clock
Such precious moments
Time, rolling by
Endlessly, it seems
Golden radiance
Heaven’s rays of love
Beaming through
On a summer morning
The day beckons
Slowly, reluctantly
Unwilling, to begin the day
Yet, we rise
But, with joy, a smile
And a mutual, eternal love
For each other
Though apart on sight
Entwined, inseparable
One heart, one soul
We are

Poet’s Notes:
A love poem I wrote in honour of my 10 years marriage anniversary with my husband this June.

Hello Beautiful

Hello beautiful,
Looking at you
I find sweetness
Into your heart
I descend deeper
I find beauty
Knowing you
A treasure

Daily Prompt: Descend

Author’s notes:
There is hidden beauty in everything and everyone we see. We just have to search it out if we want to find it. Also, if you see beauty and sweetness in your dreams and aspirations, you will descend to any level of hard work and dogged determination to work it out and fulfil it.
When you find beauty in whatever you do, work becomes play.

Letter To My Best Friend

Dear Grace .O.,

We were like two peas in a pod
We liked the same things, we were inseparable
We laughed and joked together a lot
We had little fights but made up quickly
So many sleep overs in each other’s house
We talked or rather you talked a lot
I listened, laughed and talked less
No wonder I became a writer,
We knew a lot about each other
No privacy, no secrets, no grudges
Your family became my family, and mine yours
In the same law class, we studied together
In the same course, we graduated together
In the same fellowship, we prayed together
In the same leadership group, we led together
In the same age group, we had a lot in common
Both tall, both fair, both beautiful, both intelligent
You had a good sense of humour, I had a good listening ear
Our friendship was lovely, fun, sacrificial and generous
But,
University days ended, law school ended,
We got married, had family and distance prevailed
Several hours on the phone is incomparable
To sitting in our rooms and chatting into the midnight
We travelled, we gossiped, we compared and had boy crushes
How I miss those days of youthful freedom and exuberance
My friendship with you was one of my best moments in school.

Yours affectionately,
Obioma. I.

Reminiscing About My Childhood

Out and about with play mates and friends
Cooking food with sand and empty can containers,
Role play games, hide and seek, racing and beauty contests;
With my siblings and my mum
Gathered around on the table having family funtime
While playing scrabble, ludo, monopoly
Or the card game we called “What”;
Running down the street amidst heavy downpours
Splashing, chasing, laughing while drenched;
Trips and falls, injuries and tears, empty threats and sulkings;
Boy crushes, girl fans, friendships and loyalty fights
Reconciliations amidst reluctance to apologise;
Invitations to birthdays, christenings and weddings
In smart outfits of pink lacy dresses;
Jolly adventurous trips with my playmates
Chatting, giggling, running and playing pranks
Hoping to be back home before sundown;
Cousins, aunties, uncles, friends, sleep-overs
Eavesdropping to embellished grown-up gossips;
Splashes of gifts and toys from my dad;
Dressing up in my mum’s clothes, shoes and makeup
Eager to be a grownup and “just have fun”;
Sibling fights and cuddles, school days and holidays
Eating my meal and gulping down drinks in a jiffy
In order to watch the next episode of movies and soaps-
Knight Rider, Wonder Woman, Superman, Star Wars, Danger Mouse,
The Rich Also Cry, Lady of the Rose, Cock Crows at Dawn, etc;
Sitted and hurdled around “I-know-it-all” grownups
As they shared spicy exaggerated folktales with rhyming chants
About the clever tortoise and the ever greedy lion;

The list goes on and on and on, memories of my childhood is sweet, and very endearing…

But one there is one thing I don’t miss about my childhood-
Being told to stop watching the television and go bed
Because the next day was school!

Nevertheless, I wouldn’t trade all these memories for anything less and I do hope I give my children something sweeter and better.💝💝

Some Day, Some Time, Somewhere…

Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I started that task that day” or,
“I wish I had started that project that day”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I gave it my best shot”or,
“I wish I gave it a try”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I let her know how I felt towards her”, or
“I wish I let her know how I felt towards her”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I took that opportunity”, or
“I wish I took that opportunity to live, to love, to cry, to laugh, to forgive, to make out time, to endure, to be a friend, to be friendly, to take a risk, to try something new, to challenge myself, to be better, to push the boundaries, to make mistakes and start again, to be the best, to fulfill my dreams…”

Some day, some time, somewhere… we will wake up to have regrets or rejoicing, to reminisce with contentment or contrition. Whichever the case, whatever we face would be a consequential result of the actions we take today.

Sincerity on the Test

Over the years you became friendly with a couple, Johnny and Maggie. They had no child of their own. You were very supportive to them throughout their years of pain and struggle. They finally decided and adopted a beautiful baby girl whom they totally adored and gave the best of the best.

Several donkey years down the line, at the age of 75, Johnny suffered divers severe health challenges and his life gradually deteriorated. Consequently, he spent his last years in the hospital. One particular evening, surrounded by his ageing wife Maggie, their adopted daughter Leah and her children, and you as well, Johnny was very happy and content with his loved ones around. As everyone waved jolly good byes, Johnny managed and told you to wait for some minutes.

When you came back, he said, “Ellie, please tell Maggie I’m sorry”.
“What do you mean by that, Johnny?”, you asked looking perplexed.
“Listen”, he began. “Leah is truly my daughter, I arranged for her to be adopted into my family. It was only a one night stand but I’ve lived with the guilt all these years and I want to go away in peace.” Ignoring your wide-eyed look he continued, “Her real mother was a model and didn’t want to keep her. Having Leah has been a source of untold joy to us and great pain for me. If only she came from Maggie but, I just couldn’t let her real mother remove the pregnancy. So…, I took care of all the expenses. Please, tell Maggie I’m sorry I betrayed and cheated on her sweet soul, tell her to forgive me,… and to continue to give Leah her best love”.
“But Johnny…” you said, not that you really had anything else to say but Johnny raised his hands and signalled you to stop. Then, he closed his eyes and said, “I need to rest, I’m tired. Make sure you tell Maggie this painful truth, please. I just couldn’t bear the look on her face if I’d told her myself “. With a sigh of relief, he closed his eyes to sleep.

You left his hospital bed, in a state of bewilderment and shock. Next morning, still trying to figure out how to tackle the gloomy task, your phone rang. It was Maggie. You hesitated but finally picked the phone. “Ellie”, she said, her voice sounding frail at the of the receiver, “Ellie, he’s gone. My dear Johnny is gone…” she sobbed softly. Tears streamed down your face as you realised how daunting your task will be.

If you were Ellie what will you do?
Will you be sincere with your best friend Maggie and tell her the truth in honour of a dead man’s last wish?
Or will you shield her from the truth by keeping quiet, hence not disturbing her sweet memories of her late husband and letting her mourn him peacefully?

Pins and Needles

Little things that don’t mean much are usually the things that matter most. Tiny acts of kindness, of love and care can sometimes make so much difference in relationships.
That gentle smile, that small pat on the back, the warm hug, the soft touch or peck on the cheek, those eyes that show you are understood, or just these simple words, “hello my dearest”, “I’m sorry” or “I love you”. These are just but a few.

Pins and needles do look insignificant and definitely would be lost in a sack of hay, but, they mend lots of clothes and hold great, rich fabrics together in one piece. Where would our sowing be without them? I do wonder.

Likewise, these tiny little acts of love do mend great wars, settle altercations, and hold relationships together. They are the little details that make up and complement the big picture. They are like the spices in our foods. Though unseen, yet their effects are obvious. When disregarded or neglected, they may lead to little cracks which may only be seen through God’s lens. These cracks, if not mended, will continue until suddenly there’s a complete breakdown and we begin to quote, “irreconcilable differences”.

Why do we fret, get upset and fight over these pins and needles?
Simply put: they appeal to our emotions and in a way help us realise that we are loved, we are valued, are deeply appreciated and are not taken for granted.

Daily Prompt: Tiny

Mr. Grain the Teacher

Grains. They teach us two valuable lessons about life.

The Power of Unity– one grain of sand or one grain of mustard seed cannot survive on its own, it will be lost forever, completely overwhelmed and overshadowed by the elements. But in unity with its brothers, it becomes a powerful tool in the hands of humans or Mother Nature. A pinch of salt makes a meal appealing to the palettes and who can imagine a beautiful wedding  cake without the ingredient sugar. On the other hand, high levels of salt in the body has been linked strokes and high blood pressure while excess sugar leads to diabetes.
My Point: we can achieve great things when we work with one mind, one purpose and one vision, when we are united with one another. This reiterates the concept we see in the story of the people of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). If God didn’intervene, that project would have ranked as one of man’s best creation that changed the course of history. When we forget our differences, our personal opinions and dispositions, our overestimated egos; when we forgive others of their faults, weaknesses and idiosyncrasies knowing we are also prone to same, the sky would be no more the limit but the starting point to what we can imagine, create and achieve together.

Our Need For Each Other– a single grain is absolutely inconsequential and extremely infinitesimal but a sea of sand on the beach becomes a summer tan bed. A grain of rice will hardly pass for dinner neither will a grain of coffee make a soothing hot drink on a cold winter night.
My Point: we need support from one another to function and survive. We need the support of each other to fulfil our destiny, purpose and to live a fulfilled life. We are inter-linked with each other and most times we are at our best when we come together. How true the statement, “It’s a small world”. Take the home for instance- you have the parents, the children, the landlords, the electricians, the builders, the GPs, the repair/handyman, the grocery store, the energy providers, the church, the water providers, the internet providers, furniture shop, the clothes shop, etc etc. All these need each other to survive. Think of the school system, the hospital system, the government, and so on, we all need each other. We cannot survive alone, no matter how we try to function alone; hence, the sooner we realise we need each other the better for us, for our communities, for our society and for our world.

Oh Grains- what great teachers you lot are, if only we can listen and learn.
