Reflections From Life #16

The total culmination of what or who I will be tomorrow,
The total perspective of how the world would view my life when I’m gone,
Inevitably depends on what I am doing with my time, my talents and myself now.

To achieve my dreams and aspirations in order to be that person I see in my mind, I have to daily check and ask myself,
“What am I doing now to get there?”,
“If I sum up my daily actions yesterday and today, can I confidently say they will lead me to my desired tomorrow?”

Dream. Desire. Achieve.

Your future is bigger than your failures.
The beautiful ones are not yet born.
Your dreams are bigger than your despairs.
The beautiful ones are not yet born.
Your progressions are bigger than your past.
The beautiful ones are not yet born.

Letter To My Best Friend

Dear Grace .O.,

We were like two peas in a pod
We liked the same things, we were inseparable
We laughed and joked together a lot
We had little fights but made up quickly
So many sleep overs in each other’s house
We talked or rather you talked a lot
I listened, laughed and talked less
No wonder I became a writer,
We knew a lot about each other
No privacy, no secrets, no grudges
Your family became my family, and mine yours
In the same law class, we studied together
In the same course, we graduated together
In the same fellowship, we prayed together
In the same leadership group, we led together
In the same age group, we had a lot in common
Both tall, both fair, both beautiful, both intelligent
You had a good sense of humour, I had a good listening ear
Our friendship was lovely, fun, sacrificial and generous
But,
University days ended, law school ended,
We got married, had family and distance prevailed
Several hours on the phone is incomparable
To sitting in our rooms and chatting into the midnight
We travelled, we gossiped, we compared and had boy crushes
How I miss those days of youthful freedom and exuberance
My friendship with you was one of my best moments in school.

Yours affectionately,
Obioma. I.

Some Day, Some Time, Somewhere…

Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I started that task that day” or,
“I wish I had started that project that day”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I gave it my best shot”or,
“I wish I gave it a try”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I let her know how I felt towards her”, or
“I wish I let her know how I felt towards her”.
Some day you will wake up and say,
“I’m glad I took that opportunity”, or
“I wish I took that opportunity to live, to love, to cry, to laugh, to forgive, to make out time, to endure, to be a friend, to be friendly, to take a risk, to try something new, to challenge myself, to be better, to push the boundaries, to make mistakes and start again, to be the best, to fulfill my dreams…”

Some day, some time, somewhere… we will wake up to have regrets or rejoicing, to reminisce with contentment or contrition. Whichever the case, whatever we face would be a consequential result of the actions we take today.

Awaken The Author in You

Having a book
Or many books
With your name on it,
On a shelf,
In a faraway land,
Or the house next door
In someone’s home,
Or on a school library,
Or in a Sunday school,
Read by some
Critiqued by others
Mentioned by many
Making a difference
In someone’s life
It’s surely worth doing well
It’s surely worth the wait

Overcome your inertia
Grab your pen
Enclosed in a corner
With your writing pad
Let the words flow
Days into months
And months into years
The end is nearer
With each chapter
Your world is waiting
Your peers are watching
Look into the future
Your books are there
Give it your best shot
To make a difference
In someone’s life
It’s surely worth doing well
It’s surely worth the wait

Media Bludgeoning

Thinking about this mid 18th century word with an uncertain origin and all I could think of is phrases like “bludgeoned to death by a mob” or “bludgeoned to slavery and a life of hardship”. The word may seems a bit far-fetched and like me, you may be struggling to think of something to write. But I’ve just discovered that the word is much nearer to us than we think.

Today we are bludgeoned by the media and our thought process are subtly and surely becoming affected if not changed. We are bludgeoned by the vivid pictures of naked or scantily dressed men and women, which have ricocheting effects in the mind or makes it acceptable and fashionable to dress as such.
We are bludgeoned with constant biased news about politicians and elections, hence we kind of make up our minds who we support based on the leaning of that medium.
We are bludgeoned about wars in many countries and altercations between political leaders which makes us develop, so to say, righteous anger, but we are not even given the full picture of the power tussle and political mind games played behind closed doors.
We are bludgeoned with zero sized models who have perfect bodies, hair and face which leaves many of us in the plus size range feeling inadequate and probably less human.
We are bludgeoned with many try-your-luck programs or indirect gambling where you win large amounts of money just by answering the right questions or picking the right numbers, which leaves many hopefuls quitting jobs and foregoing the core values of hardwork, commitment, patience and perseverance.

Everyday we are bludgeoned with information, documentaries, movies and stories, though seemingly harmless but content-packed with messages or lessons that could be regarded impertinent if said in person. It’s not going to stop, it’s getting worse and will keep getting worse. The question then is, what are we going to do about it?

Daily Prompt: Bludgeon

Be God’s Original

Not a copycat but the original
Not a fake beans but the real jeans
Not an imitator but an originator
That’s who God made you to be

You are unique,
You are different,
There’s only one you in the whole wide world.

Only you with that specific smile,
Only you with that peculiar face.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Some may bear the same name as you,
Another may be your twin,
Some may dress the same like you
Another may even talk like you
But, they are not you

Learn from others but add your zing to it.
Learn from them but modify yours with your own specialty
Put your own label on it.
And own your copyright

God did not copy and paste you,
He moulded and fashioned you
With a top secret, personalised, use-only-once specifications.
You are God’s original, not a copycat.

Don’t downgrade yourself,
Be God’s original and not a copycat

Daily Prompt: Copycat

If Only I Rule The World

Unemployment on a massive scale
Joblessness leading to social vices
Leaders preying on the led
Masses looting with impunity
Suicide pacts becoming the norm
Injustice, avarice and depraved perversions
Children abused and neglected
Politicians fibbing to claim and retain positions
The electorate desperate for a saviour
The rich are getting richer,
The poor are getting poorer
Multitudes, multitudes, living in depression

If only I am God, if only I rule the world
I will rearrange the world for sure
And swiftly reward men accordingly
But, sadly or gladly so, I’m not.

Daily Prompt: Rearrange

Banned, To Be Free

Banned from betrayal, free in fidelity
Banned from bitterness, free to forgive
Banned from destruction, free to help
Banned from hatred, free to love
Banned from hoarding, free to give
Banned from lies, free to speak
Banned from murder, free to live
Banned from racism, free to embrace
Banned from rebellion, free to obey
Banned from ungodliness, free in Christ

This is the world we ought to live in,
This is the world we can live in,
If we make effort,
Starting from ourselves

Daily Prompt: Banned

Valued Added Type

Every product on the shelf in any grocery store is valued based on the pice and the Value Added Tax placed on it. Comparatively, every life on this earth is valued based on the price and the VAT added to it. Well, unlike the Value Added Tax from the unwelcomed tax man, mine is rather a “Value Added Type“.

The price you place on your life and the type of value you add to it depends entirely on you. As the saying goes, “how you dress is how you are addressed”; how you project your life is how the world will perceive it. Nobody is a mind reader, hence, we only react based on how you act.

If the price you place on your life is based on the notions of low esteem, low self confidence, not worth more than a farthing, just getting by, living by the penny till the next pay date, just an average person, just an ordinary fella, got nothing to give, etc. then, the type of value you will add to it will be next to nothing. You may have great talents and potentials but if you don’t see your life as worth something, you will see nothing to fight for and will lose the battle even before the war actually started.

On the contrary, if the price you place on your life is worth more than a thousand diamonds, if you know that you are unique and special, that’s there’s only one you on this whole earth, you’re the only original God made and there’s no fake or duplicates anywhere, that you are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, that you are beautiful, that you can change your community and your world, that you can make a difference in someone’s life, that someone’s victorious song depends on you, that you are a hope, a hero and an inspiration to someone; then you will make every effort to add to it the type of value it sure deserves. If you know this, you will get up and fight for your life, for your love, for your passion, for your dreams and aspirations.

By the time you have added all the necessary quality values to your life, you will become someone people love, look forward to see and to hear, someone they aspire to be like. You will have something to give back to your community, to your world. You will be a beacon of hope, of light, of courage, of faith, of love, of perseverance and of encouragement.
20 years after you’ve gone, your name would have become indelible in the sands of time and more importantly, you would still be remembered, you would still be making a great difference in the lifes of many.

Think about your life: what’s your price? What’s your Value Added Type?

Daily Prompt: Value
